Interpreting Road report table data

How to read the Road report: one table per road alignment, one row per road section, with levels, grades, vertical curves and checks

Written by Allsite Support

Every Level AI run produces a road report: for each road section, its length, end levels, grades, vertical curves and low points, with a Checks column listing anything outside the limits for that road.

Where to find it

  • In Civil 3D — Tools panel ▸ Tools ▸ Road Report opens the table in a pane.

The Allsite.ai tab in Civil 3D with the Tools panel and its Tools dropdown open. The menu lists Cut/Fill Qty, SOQ, Lot Report and Road Report; Road Report is outlined.

  • In the Allsite.ai web app — Design ▸ Design data ▸ Road report, for the project's latest results.

The Allsite.ai web app sidebar for a project. The Design group is expanded, and inside it Design data lists Cutfill, Schedule of Quantities, Lot report, Road report, Storm capacity and Sanitary capacity. Road report is outlined.

  • As a CSV — the download button saves the visible tables.

Before you read the numbers

  • One table per road alignment, one row per section. Allsite splits an alignment into sections, so a long road has several rows. Tables are in alphabetical order by alignment name, and sections with no alignment name are grouped under Roads at the end.

  • It is the latest Level AI results run. The report is replaced each time results are generated.

  • Check the units. They sit in the column headings. Grades are percentages, levels are RL, K values are distance per percent (m/% or ft/%).

  • Grades are unsigned except Start grade and End grade. Min grade and Max grade are the flattest and steepest by size, so they do not say whether the road is rising or falling.

The Road report page. A Summary table gives alignments, road sections, total length and sections with checks. Below it the Main Street and Oak Court tables list each section with category, limits, length, start and end levels and grades.

The Summary and the Main Street and Oak Court tables, left-hand columns. Numbered markers: 1 Section, 2 Category, 3 Limits, 4 Length, 5 Start level, 6 Start grade.

The Summary

Item

What it tells you

Result set

The Level AI results set the report was made from.

Alignments

How many named alignment tables there are.

Road sections

How many rows there are across all tables.

Total length

The combined length of every section.

Sections with checks

How many sections have anything in their Checks column.

The columns

Column

What it is

Section

The section's number, as Allsite numbers it. It is not the alignment's name; the name is the table's heading.

Category

The road's category, for example LOCAL, COLLECTOR or ARTERIAL. The category decides which limits apply.

Limits

The limits this section was designed to: the grade range and the smallest sag and crest K values. The largest K is checked but not listed.

Length

The length of the section along the alignment.

Start level, End level

The finished centreline level at each end of the section (RL).

Start grade, End grade

The grade where the road ties in at each end, signed: positive is rising along the road. A flat intersection platform shows 0.00.

Min grade, Max grade

The flattest and steepest grades along the section, ignoring the intersection and road-end platforms at each end. Blank if nothing is left to measure.

Min sag K, Min crest K

The smallest K among the section's sag curves and crest curves. K is the curve length divided by the change in grade; a bigger K is a gentler curve. Blank means there is no curve of that kind. A grade break with no curve is permitted and shows no K.

Low points

Where the road dips and starts to rise again, as ch 142.0 (RL 100.35): the chainage and the level. These are the places water can collect.

Checks

Everything outside the limits, separated by semicolons. A dash means the section passes.

The right-hand columns of the road report: minimum and maximum grade, minimum sag and crest K, low points and Checks. Main Street section 2 shows a minimum grade message and Oak Court section 5 shows a maximum grade message.

The right-hand columns (scrolled). Numbered markers: 1 Min grade, 2 Min sag K, 3 Low points, 4 Checks.

Checks

Message

What it means

Min grade X% < Y% at ch a to b

The road is flatter than its minimum grade between those chainages.

Max grade X% > Y% at ch a to b

The road is steeper than its maximum grade between those chainages.

Sag K x < y at ch c

The sag curve at that chainage is tighter than the minimum K allows.

Crest K x < y at ch c

The crest curve at that chainage is tighter than the minimum K allows.

K x > y at ch c

A curve is flatter than the maximum K. This is reported only; the design does not try to avoid it.

Curve at ch c short by N

The curve is shorter than it needs to be by that amount.

The limit in a message can differ from the Limits column. At the start and end of a road the minimum K is capped by the start and end minimum K cap setting, and the message shows the capped value.

Settings that change these numbers

Setting

What it changes

Default road/rail grades (Road settings)

The minimum and maximum grade, the minimum sag and crest K, the maximum K and the smallest grade change that needs a vertical curve, for each road category. These are applied to a road the first time it is created, and can then be overridden on the road itself.

Start and end minimum K cap (Road settings)

The K limit applied at the ends of a road.

The road's category, and its start and end overrides

Which limits apply and the end levels.

The alignment itself

Every length, level and grade in its table.

Common questions

The page is empty.
No Level AI results have been generated for this project yet, or the latest results had no road data. Run Level AI and load the results.

Why has one road got several rows?
Allsite splits each alignment into sections at intersections, so a road that crosses others has a row per section.

Why are Min grade and Max grade blank?
Every part of the section is an intersection or road-end platform, which is left out of the grade check.

Why is there no K on a section with a grade change?
A grade break with no vertical curve is allowed, so there is no curve to report a K for.

Why is the limit in the message different from the Limits column?
At the ends of a road the minimum K is capped by the start and end K cap setting, and the message quotes the capped value.

The Road Settings article describes the settings behind these limits, and Road Profile Control describes how to change a road's profile. Interpreting Lot report table data covers the lot report from the same run, and Interpreting Level AI Results covers the rest of what a run produces.
